The American Kennel Club (AKC)
currently lists over 150 different breeds of dogs, from the Affenpinscher to the Yorkshire Terrier, in its registry. Their
purpose is to maintain the integrity of each of the breeds and the breed variations.. The AKC also sanctions dog events
that promote interest in the process of breeding for type and function. The dog events or trials sanctioned by the AKC
include conformation, obedience, agility, herding, field and hunting trials. They also oversee the Canine Good Citizen
test program offered by many dogs clubs and dog organizations This award can be earned by all dogs that pass the
test, both pure bred and mixed breed.
